Cargo boom at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport
A prestigious award was again conferred on Frankfurt-Hahn Airport as a cargo airport; the international trade journal Air Cargo News declared the airport in Rhineland Palatinate to be the Best Cargo Airport of the Year 2011 in the under 300,000 tons category (relating to the amount of cargo handled per year). This decision was based on the record growth rate last year. The upturn in airfreight has resulted in new record levels at several airports around the world but none of them reached the growth rate recorded by Frankfurt-Hahn. Cargo handling increased here by 55 percent in the relevant year of 2010.
This growth also continued in the first quarter of 2011; with 54,404 metric tons (own volume without transit) the airport posted an increase of 109% compared with last year. In March a new monthly all-time high was reached with 23,159 tons of airfreight handled. The previous record from November 2010 (20,053 tons) was surpassed by 15 percent, and last year's result by 98 percent.
In view of these figures, the people at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport are extremely pleased about the award. Udo Preissner, Director Marketing and Sales of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, accepted the “Oscar of the air cargo industry” in London in front of some 500 guests from the aviation industry. "We are very proud to have received this award. It confirms that we are on the right track and encourages us to do even better. I would like to pass on the praise to all colleagues whose commitment has helped us to win this prize." It was only at the beginning of April that Frankfurt-Hahn Airport received the Air Cargo Award of Excellence from readers of the cargo magazine Air Cargo World for above-average performance. It has now received the Best Cargo Airport award for the second time (the first time being in 2007). In total, two airports were selected. Shenzhen International Airport in China received the prize in the category of over 300,000 tons of cargo handled per annum. Lufthansa Cargo was nominated Cargo Airline of the Year.
