Passenger numbers exceed the one million per year threshold for the first time - the expansion continues

The one millionth passenger - Additional terminal capacity - 3000 new parking spaces

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, 23.09.2002. Frankfurt-Hahn is booming. The number of passengers is rising steeply, especially since the setting-up of the Ryanair hub in February of this year. Today, the Airport Company welcomed the one millionth passenger this year. This figure will increase to around 1.4 million by the end of 2002. In the year 2001, the number of passengers was still around 450.000.

In order to keep pace with this impressive development, the expansion of the infrastructure at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport will be further accelerated. It was recently decided that the conversion of an existing cargo hall into a passenger terminal and the construction of new parking areas would be priority projects. "Once again we are putting our ability to respond quickly and professionally to new demands to the test", so says Andreas Helfer, Managing Director of Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH. "The new installations are also following the Frankfurt-Hahn principle of building functionally and cost-effectively. This distinguishes us from other regional airports and enables us to pass on low prices to the airlines without competition. In this way, we are permanently safeguarding our market leadership against newcomers in the low-cost area." Thus, a further passenger terminal with eight check-in counters, three departure gates, four security check areas, two baggage reclaim conveyors and 740 square metres of licensee areas will be completed by 2003. The new Terminal II will be joined to the existing Terminal I by means of a weatherproof walkway and will be similar to this in its design. It is intended to be used exclusively for Schengen flights. With a total of 10,000 square metres of usable area, the two terminals will provide a processing capacity for around 3.5 million passengers. The level of the investment costs is around five million euros.

Further parking facilities are to be completed by March 2003. The parking areas in the vicinity of the terminals will be extended by about 3000 parking spaces distributed between six individual areas. The cost of this project has been estimated at three million euros.
